The next census of the population and housing began today.

It is believed (the figure is from INSTAT, but accepted as not very accurate) that on January 1, 2022, the population of Albania (residents) was 2.7 million inhabitants. 1.3% less than in 2021.

The average age was 28 years old in 1990, 33 years old in 2011, and nearly 40 years old in 2022. An average of 40-45 thousand people leave the country every year, mostly young people.

The birth-death ratio has been reversed in favor of deaths.

There are about 700,000 pensioners in Albania, so almost 1/4 of the population are elderly. An old society is a society without ambition, without manpower and with low consumption

Albania ranks third in the world for the largest diaspora. In first place is Guyana (36.4%), a miserable nation, although a rich country, in South America. In second place is Bosnia (34%), massacred by the Serbs and still divided and not stabilized, and in third place is Albania (30.7%).

The forecasts are also fatalistic. According to the UN, until 2050

Albania may lose population again and drop below 2.5 million inhabitants. While until the end of the century, i.e. in 2100, there may be 1.1 million inhabitants in Albania, or in the worst case, about 860 thousand inhabitants. Until the end of the century may seem a long time away, but in the history of a nation, 75 years is a fraction of a second.

The government calls the situation normality, movement according to the labor market. While some analysts do not see it as a tragedy, but simply a temporary escape of people. The ruling party seems satisfied, since it "manages" a small population more easily politically.

In 2021, 1.6 million people voted in Albania. 45% of them are pensioners who are paid regularly 1 month before the elections, and about 20% of the rest are administrative employees.

The opposition simply uses it as an argument for political war, but it has its own contribution to the production of this depressing environment.
